Since it entered the U.S. market back in the 60s, Jaguar vehicles have always been known for their outrageously large engines. The brand became famous for offering a 12 cylinder engine in 1971, and only discontinued its production in 1997. Since then, the largest engine offered on new Jaguar vehicles has been a V8. Now it appears that the life of this burly powerplant might be cut short as well. Announcements from Jaguar officials have indicated that large 8-cylinder cars likely won't be around forever.
Here at Jaguar Houston Central we are all too familiar with the impending restrictions being imposed by federal governments in the U.S. and Europe. Mandates have been set that will limit the maximum amount of emissions each automotive brand's fleet can produce.
While we love V8 engines for their raw power and ability to make a Jaguar live up to its jungle cat name, they aren't the most eco-friendly drivetrains out there. The auto reporting site Drive.com recently spoke with Jaguar Product and Marketing Director, Steven de Ploey, about what would come next if the V8 engines get the axe.
"Moving forward, the pressure is higher on improving emissions and we are already addressing to the current trend of downsizing engines such as replacing our naturally aspirated V8 with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6," Said Ploey. "But the future is open to different types of boosting performance, whether it is supercharging, turbo charging or some form of electrification."1
At Jaguar Houston Central, we are sure that no matter which direction Jaguar chooses to go next, it will lead to success. We will follow all updates on this story very carefully and report all the latest news here on our blog.
